Arizona lost its first season opener in 17 years.

Baylor transfer Collin McKinney and Casey Hintz limited Ole Miss to six hits while striking out seven and allowing five walks.

McKinney, making his Arizona debut, worked four-plus innings and allowed just one run while striking out three and walking three.

Garen Caufield had two of Arizona’s five hits in the game but flew out with the bases loaded in the ninth.

Tommy Splaine and Easton Breyfogle walked to lead off the ninth. After pinch hitter TJ Adams sacrificed Splaine and Breyfogle into scoring position, Richie Morales struck out.

Brendan Summerhill was intentionally walked before Caulfield flew out to right field to end the game.

Ole Miss’ Hunter Elliott pitched five shutout innings in his first start since April 2023. He allowed just two hits and struck out three on his way to his first win since the 2023 season opener against Delaware.

Louisville transfer Isaac Humphrey went 2 for 3 with a solo home run that would prove to be the difference for Ole Miss.

Connor Spencer picked up the save, his eighth as a Rebel, getting the final four outs of the game.

Elliott allowed a couple of baserunners early but found his groove late.

He allowed a couple of baserunners through the first three innings. He picked one off in the top of the third after issuing a walk. He sat the Wildcats down in order in the fourth and the fifth innings, using just 15 pitches combined.

Brayden Randle led off the fifth off with a four-pitch walk and then proceeded to steal second base. Campbell Smithwick moved him over to third with a fly ball to center field and Hill brought him home with a fly ball to right field for the first run of the game.

Humphrey then launched the first pitch he saw into the seats in right field for a 414.5-foot solo home run to make it 2-0.

Arizona continues play at the College Showdown with a Saturday morning matchup against No. 15 Clemson. First pitch is slated for 10:00 a.m., Tucson time.
