Pima softball off to 18-0 start after sweeping Eastern Arizona

The Pima Community College softball team swept a doubleheader Saturday against Eastern Arizona College at the West Campus Aztec Softball Field to improve to 18-0 overall.

The Aztecs scored 10 runs in each victory over the Gila Monsters as freshman Jiselle Nunez (Tucson) went 6 for 7 with seven RBIs and three runs in the games.

Sophomore Talia Martin (Mountain View) set the tone at the lead-off spot finishing the day 2 for 4 with five runs, an RBI and four walks.

Sophomore Aubrey Marx (Cienega) went 4 for 8 with three RBIs and two runs while fellow sophomore Alyssa Noriega (Pueblo) was 2 for 6 with three RBIs and three runs.

Pitchers Arianna Flores (Salpointe) and Jessica Thompson (Tanque Verde) got the wins in the circle.

Game 1: (23) Pima 10, Eastern Arizona College 3

Martin, Marx and Nunez all got on base to start and scored runs in the first inning to put Pima up 3-0.

Marx hit an RBI single in the second inning while Nunez followed with a two-run double to make it 6-1.

She would score on the next play as Noriega drove a ball out to right field for the home run, increasing the lead to 8-1.

The Aztecs tacked on two more runs as Nunez and Noriega scored on Thompson’s fielder’s choice play in the fourth inning.

Nunez finished the game 3 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs. Noriega was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs while Martin went 1 for 2 with two runs and two walks. Marx finished 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run.

Flores, a freshman, improved to 8-0 pitching a complete game, giving up three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and six walks on 149 pitches.

Game 2: (23) Pima 10, Eastern Arizona College 2 (5 innings)

The Aztecs closed out the day with a run-rule victory as Nunez hit a walk-off RBI double to score Martin and cap off the three-run fifth inning to end the game.

Earlier in the inning, Martin hit an RBI single to score pinch runner Mari Asher (Canyon del Oro) and Marx’s fielder’s choice play brought in sophomore Cheyanne Ortiz (Tucson).

The Gila Monsters struck first with two runs in the first inning but the Aztecs countered in the bottom half of the inning after Noriega hit a sacrifice fly to score Martin, who led off the inning with a walk.

The Aztecs scored six runs in the fourth inning to take the lead for good.

Freshman Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View) tied the game at 2 with her RBI single that scored sophomore Natalya Rivera (Sunnyside).

Two batters later, Marx gave Pima the lead with her RBI single that scored Ortiz.

Nunez belted a grand slam to center field as the Aztecs went up 7-2.

Nunez was 3 for 4 with five RBIs and a run while Martin went 1 for 2 with an RBI, three runs and two walks. Marx was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run.

Figueroa closed out the game going 2 for 3 with an RBI and Ortiz went 1 for 2 with two runs.

Thompson pitched all five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts and three walks on 80 pitches.

The Aztecs will get back into ACCAC conference play Tuesday when they host No. 10 Phoenix College at the West Campus Aztec Field. First game starts at noon.
