
The No. 5 Pima Community College softball team split a doubleheader with No. 7 Phoenix College at the West Campus Aztec Field, losing the second game after starting 19-0 on the season.
Pima (19-1, 13-1 ACCAC) was led by sophomore Aubrey Marx (Cienega), who was 5 for 8 with four RBIs and two runs in the two games.
Phoenix College (21-3, 10-2) had its 16-game winning streak snapped by Pima in the first game.
Freshman Jiselle Nunez (Tucson) was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, two runs and four walks.
Freshman Arianna Flores (Salpointe) picked up the win while freshman Belen Camacho (Pueblo) took the loss.
Game 1: (5) Pima 10, (7) Phoenix College 2 (5 innings)
The Aztecs scored three runs in the fourth inning and four runs in the fifth inning to earn the run-rule victory.
Up 3-1 in the fourth inning, the Aztecs padded their lead as Marx hit an RBI single to score freshman Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View). Nunez followed with a two-run home run to make it 6-1.
The onslaught continued in the fifth inning as Figueroa knocked in freshman Amerika Lopez-Bedoy (Sunnyside) and sophomore Cheyanne Ortiz (Tucson) with an RBI double. Marx brought in Figueroa with her RBI single. Sophomore Talia Martin (Mountain View), who drew a walk earlier in the inning, scored on an error to end the game.
The Aztecs got on the board with three runs in the first inning. Sophomore Alyssa Noriega (Pueblo) hit a two-run single driving in Marx and Nunez. She scored on a passed ball to make it 3-0.
Marx finished the game 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs. Nunez went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs while Noriega was 1 for 4 with two RBIs and a run. Figueroa closed out the game going 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs. Lopez-Bedoy and Ortiz each scored a run.
Flores picked up the win as she pitched all five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on one hit with six strikeouts and six walks on 107 pitches.
Game 2: (7) Phoenix College 4, (5) Pima 3
The Aztecs took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning but the Bears rallied off three runs in the seventh to take the lead for good.
They got on the board in the fifth inning when Marx hit an RBI double to center field to score pinch runner Mari Asher (Canyon del Oro) and tie the game at 1. Ortiz got things started with a lead-off double.
Martin and Marx hit back-to-back RBI singles in the sixth inning to put Pima ahead. Martin’s RBI single scored Lopez-Bedoy, who hit a double with one out. Marx’s RBI single brought around Figueroa, who reached on an error. The Aztecs led 3-1 heading into the seventh inning.
The Bears scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead. The Aztecs went down in order to close out the game.
Marx closed out the game going 2 for 4 with two RBIs while Martin finished 2 for 3 with an RBI and a walk.
Nunez had three walks while Figueroa scored a run. Ortiz and Lopez-Bedoy each were 1 for 3.
Camacho took the loss as she pitched all seven innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks on 114 pitches.
The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Softball Field next Tuesday when they play Mesa. The first game will start at noon.
