Unbeaten Pima earns six ACCAC honors including Peabody Coach of Year & Gonzales Player of Year

The Pima Community College men’s basketball program was well-represented when the ACCAC announced its regular-season awards on Thursday, including Brian Peabody the Division II Coach of the Year and sophomore Cohenj Gonzales as Player of the Year.

Peabody led the Aztecs to a 30-0 record in the regular season and an 18-0 record in the ACCAC. He is in his 13th season as head coach and has an overall record of 263-132 with the Aztecs. He captured his 700th overall career coaching victory on Feb. 5. He is now at 707-255 in 32 years as a head coach after Wednesday’s win over visiting South Mountain in the NJCAA Region I, Division II semifinals.

The No. 1 Aztecs (31-0) will host No. 2 Chandler-Gilbert (20-11) in the NJCAA Region I, Division II Finals on Friday at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

The Aztecs lead NJCAA Division II with 104.5 points scored per game, 54.1 field goal percentage, 25.3 rebounding margin, 24.4 assists per game and 1.281 offensive efficiency.

Gonzales was an All-ACCAC first-team for the second straight year and was also an All-Region I, Division II selection. He was selected ACCAC Freshman of the Year last season.

He averaged 18.6 points, 5.4 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 2.1 steals during the regular season. He played and started in 26 games. He shot 48.4 percent from the field, 42.0 percent from 3-point range and 84.0 percent from the free throw line.

Sophomore forward/center Gabe Oldham became a two-time All-ACCAC and All-Region player. He was selected All-ACCAC first team and All-Region I, Division II first team. He averaged 12.5 points, 8.7 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.0 block per game. He played in 26 games; making 25 starts in the regular season. He also shot 64 percent from the field.

Sophomore forward Wes Ball (Marana) was the third Pima player to be named All-ACCAC first team and All-Region I, Division II first team. He averaged 12.7 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists. He played and started in 29 games. Ball shot 62.3 percent from the field, 54.5 percent from 3-point range and 81.5 percent from the free throw line.

Sophomore guard Max Majerle, son of Phoenix Suns great Dan Majerle, was tabbed All-ACCAC second team and All-Region I, Division II second team. He averaged 15.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.0 steals. He started in 29 games. Majerle shot 51.9 percent from the field, almost 40 percent from 3-point range and 84.9 percent from the foul line.

Freshman Mason Hunt was selected ACCAC Division II Freshman of the Year, All-ACCAC third team and All-Region I, Division II third team. He averaged 11.5 points and 4.2 rebounds. He played in 28 games, making four starts.
