No. 5 Pima improves to 27-1 with sweep of Paradise Valley

The fifth-ranked Pima Community College softball team won its sixth straight game on Monday, earning an ACCAC sweep on the road against Paradise Valley in Phoenix.

Freshman Jiselle Nunez (Tucson) hit her 11th home run as she closed out the day going 2 for 5 with four RBIs and two runs for Pima, which is off to a 27-1 start overall and 19-1 in the ACCAC.

Sophomore Natalya Rivera (Sunnyside) finished 3 for 7 with two RBIs and three runs while sophomore Cheyanne Ortiz (Tucson) was 3 for 6 with an RBI and a run. Freshmen Arianna Flores (Salpointe) and Sariah Ferrentino (Sabino) got the wins in the circle against Paradise Valley (2-18, 2-16).

Game 1: (5) Pima 4, Paradise Valley 1

The Aztecs were in a close game but they broke a tie game with three runs in the sixth inning.

Rivera hit a lead-off single to start the inning and Nunez followed with a two-run homer to center field as Pima went up 3-1.

With two outs, Ortiz hit an RBI single to score freshman Julissa Lopez (Tucson) to cap the inning.

The Aztecs took their first lead of the game in the third inning as sophomore Talia Martin (Mountain View) hit an RBI double to bring around freshman Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View). The Pumas tied it at 1-1 in the fifth inning.

Nunez finished 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run while Martin went 1 for 2 with an RBI and two walks. Ortiz was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Rivera and Lopez each scored a run.

Flores got the win and improved to 11-0 as she pitched all seven innings, giving up one run on three hits with 10 strikeouts and four walks on 113 pitches.

Game 2: (5) Pima 9, Paradise Valley 1 (5 innings)

The Pima bats came alive in the first two innings as the Aztecs picked up the sweep after their run-rule win.

Rivera and freshman Belen Camacho (Pueblo) hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the first inning for the early lead.

The Aztecs took control with seven runs in the second inning.

Nunez hit a two-run double to score freshmen Amerika Lopez-Bedoy (Sunnyside) and Taiya Teixeira (Salpointe). Rivera followed with an RBI double to score sophomore Aubrey Marx (Cienega) as Pima went up 6-0. Teixeira, Lopez and Lopez-Bedoy all had RBI singles in the inning as the Aztecs took a 9-0 advantage.

Rivera closed out the game going 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs while Camacho finished 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run. Lopez-Bedoy was 2 for 2 with an RBI and a run and Nunez went 1 for 2 with two RBIs and a run. Ortiz was 1 for 3 with a run and Marx scored two runs.

Ferrentino picked up the win (3-0) as she pitched all five innings, giving up one run on three hits with three strikeouts and one walk on 69 pitches.

The Aztecs play eight games this week. They will be at the West Campus Aztec Field on Wednesday when they host Dakota County Technical College in a non-conference doubleheader. The first game starts at 10:00 a.m.
