No. 9 Arizona could not keep its run production going after scoring 15 times Friday and Devyn Netz belting a three-run home run in the first inning Saturday, losing 9-4 at BYU to close the three-game series.
The Wildcats (31-6, 8-4 Big 12) appeared on their way to another scorefest after Netz’s home run, her team-leading 12th of the year, and Kaiah Altmeyer hitting an RBI single in the second.
Arizona’s bats in the clutch went silent the remainder of the game. The Wildcats failed to score in the last four innings while leaving eight on base in that span.
The top of the seventh was symbolic of Arizona’s day, loading the bases with one out against BYU starter Kaysen Korth (11-3), only to have its last two batters pop out and strike out.
Sydney Stewart was 2 for 2 with a double and she had two walks but did not score.
She was left stranded at third base to end the game.
Arizona’s pitchers Ryan Maddox, Saya Swain and Netz allowed 12 hits, three of which were home runs.
Netz pitched a perfect game in Thursday’s 8-0 win in five innings and she was the winning pitcher in relief on Friday night.
She allowed four hits and walked a batter without a strikeout in two innings on Saturday.
Swain, who relieved Maddox with one out in the fourth, allowed two hits with a walk and a strikeout in 2/3 innings of an inning.
Swain (3-3) gave up a two-run double to Lily Owens and two-run home run to Ilove’a Brittingham after relieving Maddox. BYU (21-8, 5-4) took a 5-4 lead after the four-run rally.
In BYU’s four-run sixth inning against Netz, Brittingham had a two-run double and Lindy Milkowski belted a two-run home run.
Arizona put together a rally with one out in the seventh when Stewart and Miranda Stoddard singled and Tayler Biehl walked to load the bases. The popout and strikeout followed.
The Wildcats return to Hillenbrand Stadium next weekend after going 5-2 on a road trip that included games against Grand Canyon, Arizona State and BYU.
Arizona will host Oklahoma State in a three-game series that starts Friday at 6 p.m.
The Wildcats will go for their fourth straight Big 12 series win after losing two out of three against UCF to start conference play earlier this month.
