Sunnyside senior Sergio Vega continued his impressive run of championships and honors by winning his match Saturday at the prestigious Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic and earning the Most Outstanding Wrestler award.
Bringing home the Most Outstanding Wrestler honor is quite an achievement for Vega because the event featured 22 of the top wrestlers in the nation, most of them bound for elite Division I programs.
Vega, a four-time state champ at Sunnyside who is headed to Oklahoma State, was one of the members of the United States All-Star Team wrestling against the Pennsylvania All-Star Team.
Wrestling at 139 pounds, Vega won by technical fall (20-4) over Rutgers-bound Tahir Parkins of Nazareth, Pa.
Oklahoma State coach David Taylor was in attendance to watch Vega and three other of his future wrestlers compete.
The victory for Vega comes only two weeks after he was selected the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Junior division of the 2025 Air Force Special Warfare 16U and Junior Folkstyle Nationals at West Des Moines, Iowa. He captured the 150-pound championship in that event.
Other achievements for Vega over the last calendar year:
— Maintained a 4.0 GPA
— Signed with Oklahoma State
— Earned his fourth straight state championship with Sunnyside last month
— No. 1-ranked in the nation at 138 pounds
— Won the Super 32 Challenge Championship at 138 pounds in October
— Beat Drew Gorman, a Virginia Tech commit, in the Who’s Number One folkstyle event in September
— Captured the USA Wrestling’s Fargo (N.D.) Junior Freestyle National Championships over Gorman in July
— Finished third at the U20 World Team Trials in June
— Won the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) Nationals title last April
