Starting right-hander Owen Kramkowski, a Class of 2023 graduate of Walden Grove, nearly worked a complete game in Arizona’s 5-3 victory over Arizona State at Phoenix on Saturday night.
His 8 2/3-inning gem helped Arizona (22-8, 8-3 Big 12) claim the series over the 24th-ranked Sun Devils (20-11, 7-4).
Arizona, which beat the Sun Devils 8-5 on Friday night, will go for the sweep Sunday at 5 p.m. (ESPN2 and 1290-AM).
Arizona’s five-game winning streak against Arizona State is its longest since the Wildcats won five consecutive games between the 2017 and 2018 seasons.
It is the second-longest winning streak since 1979, when the Wildcats swept the six games that season (the programs back then played a three-game series in Tempe and Tucson).
The longest Arizona winning streak against Arizona State is 29 games from 1949 to 1957.
Kramkowski (4-3) limited Arizona State to three runs on nine hits and struck out five with only walk on 104 pitches.
Tony Pluta entered in the ninth with two outs and runners on first and second and struck out Josaiah Cromwick for the final out, earning his team-leading fifth save of the year.
Garen Caulfield led off the game with a home run, sending the third pitch of the game over the wall in left center.
Left fielder Andrew Cain of Ironwood Ridge also homered while shortstop Mason White of Salpointe hit a two-run triple in the sixth inning.
The Wildcats have achieved their first road series win over the Sun Devils since 2021.
Arizona State’s Jack Martinez (3-2) took the loss despite striking out 12 with only one walk in seven innings.
