
The Pima Community College softball team swept a doubleheader by scores of 9-3 and 11-0 in five innings on the road Saturday against Mesa, improving to 37-5 overall and 25-5 in the ACCAC.
Freshman Jiselle Nunez (Tucson) was 4 for 4 on the day with two RBIs and three runs against Mesa (6-26, 4-24).
Sophomore Talia Martin (Mountain View) went 6 for 9 with three RBIs and three runs while sophomore Natalya Rivera (Sunnyside) was 4 for 8 with four RBIs and two runs.
Freshman Julissa Lopez (Tucson) finished the day 3 for 6 with three RBIs and a run. Sophomore Aubrey Marx (Cienega) was 2 for 7 with an RBI and four runs. Freshmen Sariah Ferrentino (Sabino) and Belen Camacho (Pueblo) got the wins in the circle.
·Game 1: (11) Pima 9, Mesa 3: The Aztecs took the lead in the first inning and never relinquished it.
Rivera hit a two-run single with the bases loaded to bring in Marx and Nunez. Lopez followed by driving in two runs, scoring sophomore Alyssa Noriega (Pueblo) and Rivera as Pima took a 4-0 lead.
The Thunderbirds scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Aztecs countered with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Noriega hit a sacrifice fly to plate Martin while Rivera hit an RBI single to drive in Marx to make it 8-2.
Rivera hit another RBI single in the fourth inning. She finished the game 3 for 4 with four RBIs and a run.
Lopez was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Noriega hit an RBI single in the second inning and went 1 for 4 with two RBIs and a run. Martin finished 4 for 5 with an RBI, two runs and three steals. Nunez was 1 for 1 with a run.
Ferrentino picked up the win as she pitched a complete game, giving up three runs on six hits with two strikeouts and no walks on 109 pitches.
Game 2: (11) Pima 11, Mesa 0 (5 innings): The Aztecs scored all 11 runs in the third inning and Camacho pitched a five-inning shutout.
The Aztecs hit for the cycle in the third inning and scored all their runs with two outs.
Freshman Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View) hit a two-run triple while Martin hit a two-run single.
Nunez capped the inning with a two-run home run. Lopez and Camacho had back-to-back RBI singles while Marx had an RBI double. The Aztecs also took advantage of two errors by the Thunderbirds.
Nunez finished the game 3 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs while Figueroa went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run. Martin was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run and Marx was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs. Lopez was 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run while Camacho went 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run.
Camacho pitched all five innings, giving up two hits with 12 strikeouts and three walks on 94 pitches.
The Aztecs will be back on the road on Tuesday when they play a doubleheader against Glendale. First game starts at 12:00 p.m.
