Salpointe Class of 2020 graduate Evan Nelson, who led the Lancers to their first state championship that year, is transferring to Arizona from Harvard, according to a 247Sports.com/CBS report.

Nelson, a Tucson native who will be a backup point guard to Jaden Bradley and five-star Class of 2025 prospect Brayden Burries, earned Academic All-Ivy honors this season while earning a degree in sociology.

He made 25 starts and ranked fourth in the Ivy League in steals per game (1.4) and 12th in assists per game (2.9).

Nelson, 6-foot-2 and 170 pounds, averaged 9.1 points a game and shot 40.4 percent from. 3-point range.

He has one more year of eligibility because the 2020-21 season was affected by COVID-19 and he sat out the 2023-24 season after undergoing left Achilles surgery.

He was a teammate at Salpointe with Grant Weitman, who earned a scholarship at Arizona this season after being a walk-on with the program. Weitman exhausted his eligibility.

Another Salpointe teammate who was part of the 2019-20 championship team was former Tennessee standout Jordan Gainey.

As a senior that year with the Lancers, Nelson averaged 17.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.9 steals per game.
