Hi Corbett chaos or Hi Corbett magic, call it what you will, high fly balls in the dark desert sky at twilight have most often benefited Arizona.
In Friday night’s 4-2 loss in 10 innings to Oklahoma State, twilight worked against the Wildcats.
With Arizona (23-10, 8-5 Big 12) up 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning, Garrett Shull hit a moon shot to right field. Arizona freshman and Tucson native Gunner Geile lost track of the ball in right field. What should have been the first out of the inning turned into a double for Oklahoma State.
The double set up a two-run single through the left side by Drew Culbertson.
Oklahoma State (16-15, 5-6) held their 2-1 lead until the bottom of the ninth and Aaron Walton decided the Hi C crowd deserved some free baseball.
Walton tied the game with a 420-foot solo home run to right-center that sent the game into extra innings.
A two-run single to left by OSU’s Jayson Jones in the top of the tenth proved to be the winning hit for the Cowboys.
Oklahoma State’s Harrison Bodendorf (7-1) threw a 10-inning complete game allowing just three hits, all by Walton.
Arizona starter Collin McKinney had his best game of the season throwing 5 2/3 innings with eight strikeouts allowing seven hits and two unearned runs.
Casey Hintz (6-2) took the loss, pitching 3 2/3 innings of relief, striking out three and walking one while allowing three hits and two runs.
The second game of the weekend series is at 6 p.m. on Saturday in Hi Corbett.
