Arizona opens series at Houston with run-rule victory

Arizona improved to 41-10 overall and 15-7 in the Big 12 with a 10-1 victory in five innings at Houston on Friday.

The Wildcats are now 8-2 in Big 12 road games.

The three-game series at Houston (22-22, 4-16) resumes Saturday at noon, Tucson time.

The Wildcats are two games ahead of Iowa State (28-22, 13-9) for second place in the Big 12 standings.

Texas Tech (41-11, 19-3) has clinched the regular season championship.

Arizona can clinch the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Big 12 tournament with a win Saturday or if Iowa State loses at home to Baylor. The Cyclones lost 10-0 in five innings to the Bears on Friday.

With a No. 2 seed, the Wildcats will not have to face Texas Tech until the championship round if both teams make it that far.

In Arizona’s win over Houston on Friday, the Wildcats were powered by home runs by Dakota Kennedy (her fifth of the season), Sydney Stewart (15) and Miranda Stoddard (12).

Stoddard (11-0) was also the winning pitcher going an effective 4 1/3 innings, scattering six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Saya Swain pitched the last 2/3 inning and did not allow a runner on base.

After Houston’s Maddie Hartley hit a home run in the second inning to open the scoring, Arizona got on the board on Kaiah Altmeyer’s RBI single. Altmeyer and Regan Shockey then pulled off a double steal with Shockey running home to put Arizona ahead 2-1.

Arizona scored two more runs in the fourth inning, including Stoddard’s solo blast.

Stewart hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning and Kennedy followed later in the inning with a grand slam.
