
Salpointe graduate Arianna Flores of No. 2 Pima Community College struck out 10 batters in her complete-game shutout over No. 3 South Mountain in the opening game of the NJCAA Region I, Division II tournament at Phoenix College.
Flores, a freshman who was the Co-Pitcher of the Year in the ACCAC, allowed only three hits while tallying only one walk to go with 10 strikeouts in the 6-0 victory for Pima (48-7).
The Aztecs will play No. 4 Scottsdale (29-19) in a winners’ bracket game Friday at 11:30 a.m. The Artichokes upset No. 1 Phoenix College 5-3 in the other opening-round game Thursday.
Mountain View alum Talia Martin led off the game with a triple and Aubrey Marx (Cienega) followed with a single to give the Aztecs the only run support Flores (19-3) needed against South Mountain starter Alyssa Jemio (12-5).
Marx hit a single with two outs in the third inning and Jiselle Nuñez followed with her 21st home run of the season to increase the lead to 3-0.
With one out in the fourth inning and the bases loaded, Martin hit a two-run double and Marx then drove in a run with a single, putting the Aztecs ahead 6-0.
Flores retired 13 straight batters before allowing a single to lead off the seventh. She proceeded to get the next three batters out, including one by strikeout, to end the game.
