Tracking former Southern Arizona & Arizona Wildcats baseball players in pros (6/19)

NOTE: This is a compilation of stats involving players from Southern Arizona and the Pima Community College and Arizona Wildcats’ programs in MLB-sanctioned leagues (MLB and minor leagues). The list does not include players in foreign leagues or independent leagues in the US.

Right-hander Austin Smith (left) and second baseman Kobe Kato are not only teammates at Double-A Columbus (Ga.) of the Atlanta Braves organization, but lately, they have thrown out of the bullpen together.

FORMER ARIZONA TEAMMATES PITCHING OUT OF BULLPEN IN DOUBLE A

Austin Smith and Kobe Kato, teammates at Arizona when the Wildcats advanced to the 2021 College World Series, are now together at Double-A Columbus (Ga.) of the Atlanta Braves organization. Taking it one step further, they have each pitched out of the bullpen together in recent games because Columbus manager Cody Gabella and pitching coach Mike Steed have opted to use Kato, normally a second baseman, as a reliever twice in the last week. After Smith pitched a scoreless 1 2/3 innings before him Wednesday night, Kato threw the last two innings in the second game of a doubleheader, an 8-7 loss to the Birmingham (Ala.) Barons. Kato took the loss, but the two runs scored against him were unearned. He was the last pitcher used in the second game of a doubleheader last week when Columbus lost to Knoxville (Tenn.) Smokies 5-1. In his two games on the mound, Kato did not allow an earned run in three innings, with two hits allowed while not throwing a strikeout or a walk. The Hawaiian infielder has pitched twice before in his career — an inning with the La Crosse (Wis.) Loggers of the Northwoods Summer College League in 2020 while attending Arizona and 2/3 of an inning with the Single-A Fayetteville (Ark.) Woodpeckers of the Houston Astros organization in 2021 after he was drafted in the 13th round by the Astros. He did not fare as well on the mound with La Crosse and Fayetteville, giving up three earned runs in his inning with the Loggers and an earned run in the 2/3 of an inning with the Woodpeckers. He never pitched for Jay Johnson at Arizona.
