Sunnyside beat Litchfield Park 3-1 Tuesday night in Payson to win the state Junior Baseball Championship. Sunnyside went 3-0 at the District 12 tournament and then followed that up with a 5-0 run at the state tournament with wins over Lake Havasu, Nogales, Flowing Wells and then two straight wins over Litchfield Park to go 8-0 heading to Junior Baseball West Region play beginning July 23 in Bend, Oregon. Sunnyside will take on Oregon in the first game.
Sunnyside scored two runs in the top of the second inning after Emilio Medina led off with a double and then David Blasi walked to put two runners. Humberto Rodriguez singled in Medina one out later and then Blasi scored on an infield error for what turned out to be the winning run.
Angel Salazar doubled in Rodolfo Carbajal in the third to make it 3-0 and Litchfield Park scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead down to 3-1. Ozzie Guadarrama threw six innings for Sunnyside and Medina took the mound in the seventh. The duo scattered three hits and struck out four. Sunnyside collected seven hits and only struck out one.
