Tempe Diablo Stadium charity event to raise funds for Oscar Romero

The Team Emery Classic, to be held at Tempe Diablo Stadium from Thursday through Sunday, is a baseball charity event scheduled to help raise funds for longtime baseball coach Oscar Romero.

Tucson High, where Romero spent most of his coaching and teaching career, and Nogales will take part in the tournament.

Pool play runs through Saturday with the championship bracket scheduled Sunday.

A fan fest is scheduled for Saturday from 6-9 p.m.

A kickball game is scheduled at that time between Tucson High alums and Phoenix Desert Vista graduates.

The fundraiser is for Romero and former Desert Vista standout Jake Romaine, both of whom are battling life-threatening illnesses.

Romero is fighting liver cancer, undergoing chemotherapy, radiation treatments, and other procedures while waiting for a transplant.

He taught and coached baseball at Tucson for 35 years. He led the Badgers to 488 victories and 16 American Legion state titles with Post 7.

in recent days, Romero has been visited by many of his former players at his home as a showing of support following his recent hospitalization.

Romaine was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia after graduating from Desert Vista in 2023. He had to put his career on hold after signing with Paradise Valley Community College.

His cancer went into remission in March but returned July 22 and he is undergoing treatments.
