
The Pima Community College men’s soccer team won its seventh straight game on Saturday with a 2-0 win over Mesa at the West Campus Aztec Field.
The No. 7 Aztecs (9-1, 6-1 in ACCAC) secured their fifth shutout victory of the season. The Aztecs have outscored their opponents 32-2 in the seven-game winning streak.
With the game scoreless with Mesa (3-3-2, 2-3-2) for much of the first half, the Aztecs got on the board when sophomore Robert Castaneda (Nogales) drove in a goal in the 42nd minute with an assist from fellow sophomore Edgar Leyva-Miranda (Desert View).
Pima got an insurance goal when freshman Leonel Gutierrez (Salpointe Catholic) scored his team-leading 13th goal of the season in the 58th minute. Castaneda provided the assist.
The Pima defense held the Thunderbirds to no shots on goal.
Freshman Tommaso Leonardi was at the net and finished with no saves.
The Aztecs will begin the second half of the season Saturday, when they take on Phoenix College at the West Campus Aztec Field.
The Aztecs fell to the Bears 3-0 in their first meeting Sept. 6.
