Pima women’s soccer remains unbeaten in ACCAC play after rout of Mesa

The Pima Community College women’s soccer team scored six of its goals in the second half to beat Mesa 8-1 on Saturday in ACCAC action at the West Campus Aztec Field.

The No. 9 Aztecs (5-1-3, 5-0-2 in ACCAC) held a slim lead after the first half of play, but the offense dominated in the second half to beat the Thunderbirds (2-7-1, 1-5-1).

The Aztecs, 5-0-1 in their last six games, had 10 different players score points.

Sophomore Samantha Mendez (Tucson) and freshman Hannah Romero (Tucson) each scored two goals.

Mendez scored the first two goals of the second half in a little over one minute, in the 57th and 58th minutes, to give Pima a 4-1 advantage.

Romero netted the final two Pima goals of the game in the 85th and 88th minutes.

Sophomore Kristal Navarro (Tucson) and freshman Gabriela Mendoza (Tucson) each distributed two assists.

Freshman Yajaira Cervantes (Tucson) scored the first goal of the game in the 12th minute and assisted in sophomore Ashley Martinez’s (Sunnyside) goal in the 64th minute to make it 5-1.

Sophomore Marissa Garate (Tucson) played her first game of the season and made an impact with a free kick goal in the 77th minute to make it 6-1.

Freshman Karina Tapia (Sabino) scored her goal in the 32nd minute. Freshman Ava Dagnino (Salpointe) and sophomore Anjeli DesRosier (Salpointe) each had one assist in the game.

The Aztecs finished with 16 shots on goal and held the Thunderbirds to two for the game. Freshman Angelina Moraga (Sabino) closed out the game with two saves.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Field next Saturday, when they start the second half of the season against rival Phoenix College. Game time is set for 5:45 p.m. The Aztecs and the Bears tied at 1-1 in their first meeting on Sept. 6.
