CATALINA FOOTHILLS 141, MARANA 179
Oct. 1: Omni Tucson National Catalina Course
Catalina Foothills junior Zachary Schaefer shot a 4-under-par 32 to pace the Falcons to a 141-179 win over Marana Wednesday at the Omni Tucson National. Schaefer recorded an eagle on the second hole to help offset a bogey on the third. He shot a birdie on the sixth, eighth and ninth holes to end his round. Marana senior Riley Stidham came in two strokes behind for second place.
As a team, the Falcons shot a 3-under 141 on the Catalina Course and the team is currently the top-ranked team Arizona regardless of classification. Senior Chase Cesarek is ranked No. 3 in Division II and Schaefer is No. 5.
In D-I, Stidham needs a couple more qualifying rounds to qualify for state as an individual. At this point, Stidham will be the only golfer with a high enough ranking to qualify for the state playoffs. The top 12 ranked teams and the top 18 ranked individuals not attached to a qualifying team will make the playoffs. Teams and individuals need seven qualifying rounds.
