Cervantes’ three assists lead Pima women to 3-0 win over Chandler-Gilbert

The Pima Community College women’s soccer team got back in the win column Tuesday night, beating visiting Chandler-Gilbert 5-1 in ACCAC conference action behind freshman Yajaira Cervantes’ three assists.

The No. 10 Aztecs (6-1-4, 6-0-3 in ACCAC) scored three unanswered goals in the second half to beat the Coyotes (3-6, 3-5). They swept the regular season meetings with Chandler-Gilbert, also winning 3-0 on Sept. 9 at Chandler.

Cervantes (Tucson) played her part in assisting both of Pima’s goals in the first half. Sophomore Samantha Mendez (Tucson) put the Aztecs on the board in the 6th minute. Sophomore Ashley Martinez (Sunnyside) made it 2-0 with her goal in the 10th minute.

The Coyotes cut Pima’s lead in half in the 58th minute with a goal by Alivia Waite.

The Aztecs responded as Mendez netted her second goal of the game and Cervantes provided her third assist in the 66th minute.

Sophomore Savannah Michel (Walden Grove) scored her first goal of the season with her shot in the 86th minute to make it 4-1. Sophomore Marissa Garate (Tucson) helped put the game away with her goal a minute later in the 87th minute. Freshman Ava Dagnino (Salpointe Catholic) had the assist.

The Aztecs finished with 16 shots on goal as the Coyotes finished with four. Sophomore Brooke Valencia (Sabino) closed out the game with three saves. Freshman Angelina Moraga (Sabino) played the second half and recorded no saves.

The Aztecs will return to the West Campus Aztec Field on Thursday when they host a non-conference game against Cochise College. Game time is set for 5:45 p.m.
