Marana senior Colten Meyer became the third quarterback from Southern Arizona to break 8,000 career passing yards after throwing for 439 yards in a 48-20 victory over Mountain View Friday night. At his rate of 309.3 yards per game, Meyer would need at least two playoff games to pass former Sabino standout Cameron Hackworth for the all-time record.
The state record is 12,590 by former Yuma Catholic standout Richard Stallworth. Former Perry standout Brock Purdy is sitting at No. 20 with 8,932 career passing yards. The Tigers would need to reach the 5A championship game to give that mark a shot.
Meyer did not play as a freshman and only played in seven games as a sophomore.
Marana (8-1) is in line for a first-round bye in the playoffs and the team plays at Vista Grande (3-6) this Friday night.
