
The Pima Community College men’s basketball team opened ACCAC play on Wednesday at Phoenix College with a 96-62 victory.
The No. 8 Aztecs (7-0, 1-0 in ACCAC) produced their first double-digit lead less than five minutes into the game and used runs in each half to pull away from the Bears (5-6, 0-2).
Pima scored seven straight points to take a 14-4 lead with 15:46 left in the half.
It led 24-17 before using a 14-1 run to take a 38-18 advantage.
Freshman Gerron Graham (Tucson Premier Academy) hit a pair of free throws and sophomore Brock Mendoza scored in the paint to give the Aztecs their biggest lead in the first half at 42-21.
Pima went into the locker room at halftime leading 51-33.
·The Aztecs maintained their double digit advantage but the Bears cut into it making it 55-41.
Pima went on a 20-5 run that was capped by sophomore Mason Hunt’s three free throws and freshman Isaiah Hill’s (Pueblo/Tucson Premier Academy) basket to make it 75-46. The Aztecs produced a stretch of outscoring the Bears 31-10 in the half, putting the score at 86-51 with 7:06 remaining.
Hill finished with a team-high 19 points on 7-for-10 shooting and 3 for 5 from 3-point range. He added eight steals, five assists and two rebounds.
Sophomore Isaac Johnson went 8 for 12 from the field with 18 points along with four rebounds, three assists, three steals and three blocks.
·Hunt added 15 points, five rebounds and five steals.
The bench scored 38 points as Mendoza and sophomore Taevean Famutimi-Brown each scored 10 points. Mendoza had a double-double after he finished with 14 rebounds. He also had three blocks. Famutimi-Brown had four rebounds and three assists.
The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Saturday against Park University JV. Tipoff is set for noon.
