Going into Saturday’s game against the Glendale Community College Gauchos, the Pima Aztecs were primed and ready to build on their six-game winning streak.
It was clear from the tip that the Gauchos (5-5, 1-3 ACCAC) were no match for the athleticism and determination of the Aztecs.
No. 6 Pima (9-2, 3-0) took an early lead, and although the Gauchos showed some fight, making one lead change and two ties, the Aztecs took control in the 78-49 ACCAC win over Glendale.
The victory extended the Aztecs’ winning streak to seven.
“It wasn’t pretty; if I was going to be completely honest, there’s probably a lot of things we could have done better but I like the fact we were able to pull away,” Pima coach Todd Holthaus said. “Our depth wore them down and I think we have kind of a mentality that we just kind of keep coming. We try to eliminate any runs by the other teams.
“We really didn’t let them get on any runs. We crashed the boards, so we missed a lot but we got a lot of offensive rebounds. You look up at the end and you win by 30, you take it and move on to the next one.”

With Pima leading 37-27 headed into the half, the Aztecs outscored the Gauchos 22-10 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 59-37.
Pima’s defense didn’t let up, holding Glendale to 12 points in the fourth quarter.
Melicia Nelson achieved her second triple-double of the season. Nelson had a triple-double in Pima’s win last week over South Mountain (11 points, 13 points and 13 assists) and notched another in the win over Glendale with 17 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists.
Kiley Sours-Miller owned the paint, producing a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds. She also had three steals.
The Aztecs had 23 second-chance points and scored 26 points in the paint.
“Kiley is just a weapon that a lot people don’t have and she’s good,” Holthaus said. “Obviously, she’s big but she’s skilled too, so that really helps. It obviously helps our guards because they have someone they can throw it in the middle.
“She’s getting better and better of when people collapse or double team. She’s good about kicking it back out.”
Reigne Waugh was the only other Aztec to score in double digits with 13 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the floor and 1 for 2 from the arc.
Pima shot 85.7% from the free-throw line, making 12 of 14.
There are four Southern Arizona players on the Aztecs’ roster.
- Freshman guard Jolee Nelson of Salpointe Catholic
- Freshman guard Nevaeh Urenda of Flowing Wells
- Sophomore guard Cassie Coolidge of Sahuaro
- Sophomore post/forward Gabriella Sanchez of Tucson High
Pima will travel to Scottsdale Community College on Wednesday. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m.
