- Tommy Lloyd’s 100th Win: Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd reached his 100th career victory in just 126 games (following a win over Oklahoma State on Jan. 21), becoming the fastest active head coach to reach that milestone and matching his mentor, Mark Few.
- Caleb Love’s “Miracle Shot”: One of the most viral moments of the month was Caleb Love’s 55-foot buzzer-beater to force overtime against No. 3 Iowa State on Jan. 27. The Wildcats won 86-75.
- LeBron James’ son commits to Arizona: Bryce James broke the news of his commitment to Arizona on New Year’s Day.
High School Sports
- The Koa Peat Appearance: Five-star recruit Koa Peat (a major Arizona target) led Gilbert Perry High School to a 64-48 victory over Tucson High on Jan. 7 in front of a capacity crowd. Despite foul trouble, Peat finished with 22 points and 16 rebounds in a game comparable to Mike Bibby’s legendary 1996 appearance in Tucson when Phoenix Shadow Mountain visited Salpointe.
- Salpointe Girls Basketball Dominance: The Lancers made a statement with an 82-48 victory over Catalina Foothills in a battle of highly-ranked teams. Senior Sidney Anderson was a standout, eventually reaching the 1,000-point career milestone.
- Hometown boys done good in CFP national championship game: Salpointe graduate Lathan Ransom earned a national title with Ohio State in the Buckeyes’ victory over Notre Dame in the championship game Jan. 20. Santa Rita alum Bryce Dempsey coached against Ransom and Ohio State as a defensive analyst with the Fighting Irish.
Pima Community College
- Unbeatable Aztecs: The Pima Community College men’s basketball team, led by Brian Peabody, continued a dominant run, with Peabody earning his 250th win with the Aztecs during an 23-0 start to their season.
Other highlight
- Dr. J makes a Tucson housecall: Basketball legend Julius Erving, affectionately known as Dr. J, took part in a fireside chat with Arizona legend Bob “Big Bird” Elliott, the co-founder of the African-American Museum of Southern Arizona, in a fireside chat at Palo Verde High School on Jan. 16.
