Pima completes sweep of Division I opponent Cochise

The Pima Community College women’s basketball team closed 2025 with another big win over ACCAC Division I team Cochise at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Tuesday.

The No. 5 Aztecs (11-3) — a Division II team — scored the first seven points of overtime to beat Cochise 72-67.

It was Pima’s second straight win over the Apaches in as many days as they won 93-83 on Monday.

Before Monday’s win, the Aztecs had lost the previous six meetings to the Apaches with their last win on April 2, 2021.

Freshmen Kahlia Gonzales and Reigne Waugh were crucial in Pima’s run to start the extra period.

Gonzales hit a 3-pointer and Waugh made three free throws to make it 70-63.

Sophomore Lucy Land scored the first point with her free throw. The Apaches cut Pima’s lead to 70-67 but freshman Lucy Fisher’s jumper halted their run.

The Aztecs led 28-26 at halftime and started the third quarter on a 9-0 run to make it 37-26.

The Apaches went scoreless for the first 3:12 of the quarter. The Aztecs matched their biggest lead of the game at 48-37 entering the fourth quarter.

Pima held a 52-41 lead, but Cochise went on a 13-2 run to tie the game at 54-54.

Pima never surrendered the lead but there were three more tie scores before it went to overtime. There were nine ties and five lead changes in the game.

Waugh finished with a team-high 17 points on 6-for-9 shooting. She also had five rebounds and three steals.

·Sophomore Melicia Nelson had 16 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals while fellow sophomore Kiley Sours-Miller added 11 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

Gonzales had 10 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals off the bench.

The Aztecs shot 43.6 percent (24 of 55) from the field, 40 percent (6 of 15) from beyond the arc and 64.3 percent (18 of 28) from the free-throw line.

The Aztecs get back to ACCAC play to start the new year as they play Chandler-Gilbert on Saturday at the West Campus Aztec Gym. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
