Pueblo senior wing player America Cazares, who is challenging to become the first girls basketball player in state history to score 3,000 career points, earned the distinction Thursday night of becoming the first to eclipse 60 points in a game at the big-school level (4A to 6A).
She finished with 62 points in the Warriors’ 81-23 win at Desert View, topping her previous high of 59 points in a win over Palo Verde two seasons ago that was the previous big-school record.
Diane Beecroft of 2A Antelope had 65 points in a game against Bagdad in the 1977-78 season.
Cazares, the state’s leading scorer at 30.4 points a game, is at 487 points this season and 2,513 overall.
She is 400 points behind the state record-holder Julie Brase (Catalina Foothills, 2,913 points from 1994-98) and trails Alyssa Brown (Sahuaro, 2,680 points from 2017-21) by 167 points.
Cazares is headed to Todd Holthaus’ Pima Community College program next season.
