Former CDO & Arizona running back Kayden Luke commits to West Virginia

Canyon del Oro graduate and former Arizona fullback Kayden Luke will join Rich Rodriguez’s program at West Virginia, Luke announced on social media Sunday.

Luke, 5-foot-11 and 249 pounds, will be the first fullback listed on West Virginia’s roster.

According to reports out of West Virginia, Rodriguez, Arizona’s coach from 2012 to 2017, wants to bring the fullback position back to his offensive scheme.

Rodriguez reportedly also wants to incorporate his tight ends at the fullback position.

Luke played linebacker and running back at CDO, but was utilized as a fullback in Brent Brennan’s two seasons at Arizona.

He experienced limited duty. In 2024, he played in 12 games as a true freshman and rushed five times for 20 yards. Luke played in 12 more games this season and was primarily a blocker. He did not record a carry.

Based on his limited experience, Luke can petition for another year of eligibility.

Arizona travels to West Virginia in the fall. The Mountaineers are not slated to visit Casino del Sol Stadium at Arizona until the 2028 season, when Luke potentially will be a fifth-year senior.

Luke rushed for 2,307 yards and 29 touchdowns during the 2023 season, when he helped CDO defeat Yuma Catholic to win the 4A state title. He also made 66 tackles at linebacker and was one of the top wrestlers in the state at 215 pounds.

He rushed for 3,609 yards and 52 touchdowns on 451 carries during his CDO career playing for Dustin Peace.

On defense during his Dorado career, Luke made 90 total tackles including 12.5 tackles for loss.
