No. 7 Pima men 19-0 after using three double-digit runs in first half to stymie Phoenix College

The Pima Community College men’s basketball team improved to 19-0 overall, 8-0 in the ACCAC, by dominating Phoenix College in the first half of Saturday’s 120-70 win at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

The No. 7 Aztecs achieved their 13th game of the season scoring in triple digits with the rout of the Bears (8-12, 0-8).

Pima scored the first 13 points of the game before the Bears got on the board with two free throws at the 16:41 mark.

The Aztecs went on an 11-0 run to make it 24-2.

Phoenix College started 0-for-6 from the field with five turnovers in the first 6:30 of the game. They scored their first field goal with 13:30 left in the half.

The Aztecs used another 13-0 run to make it 39-7. They took a 63-19 lead at halftime as they scored the final nine points of the half.

Pima’s biggest lead was 56 points at 117-61 with 3:07 left in the game.

Sophomore Isaac Johnson went 10-for-13 from the field with a team-high 23 points and 11 rebounds. He also finished with five steals.

Sophomore Brock Mendoza posted his 11th double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds to go with two blocks. He was 7 for 9 from the field, including making his lone attempt from beyond the arc.

Freshman Isaiah Hill (formerly of Pueblo and Premier Prep Academy) shot 6 for 8 from the field and 5 for 6 from 3-point range to finish with 17 points to go with four assists while sophomore Mason Hunt added 14 points, five assists, four steals and three rebounds.

The Pima bench scored 39 points as freshman Rowan McKenzie had 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists and sophomore Taevean Famutimi-Brown and Gerron Graham each contributed with nine points.

The Aztecs shot 55.8% from the field (43 for 77), 51.5% from 3-point range (17 for 33) and 81% from the free throw line (17 for 21).

Pima will play on the road for the first time since Dec. 17 when it heads to Chandler-Gilbert on Wednesday for an ACCAC matchup at 7:30 p.m.
