
Pueblo senior wing player America Cazares continued her quest to become the state’s first 3,000-point career scorer, breaking her own big-school (4A to 6A) record with 64 points in a 121-22 win over visiting Buena on Friday.
She made 27 of 41 field-goal attempts, including a 10-of-19 performance from 3-point range.
The production surpassed her 62 points in the Warriors’ 81-23 win at Desert View on Jan. 8. She had the previous record of 59 points in a win over Palo Verde two seasons ago.
Pueblo (15-4, 2-0 5A Southern) hosts Desert View (10-8, 0-1) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Diane Beecroft of 2A Antelope holds the state record for all schools with 65 points in a game against Bagdad in the 1977-78 season.
Cazares, the state’s leading scorer at 32.4 points a game, is at 551 points this season and 2,577 overall. Her scoring average ranks eighth nationally, according to MaxPreps.
She is 336 points behind the state record-holder Julie Brase (Catalina Foothills, 2,913 points from 1994-98) and trails Alyssa Brown (Sahuaro, 2,680 points from 2017-21) by 103 points.
Cazares is headed to Todd Holthaus’ Pima Community College program next season.
