
The Pima Community College softball team earned its season-opening victory, 6-3 over Yavapai on Saturday in the Stacey Iveson Invitational at the West Campus Aztec Softball Field.
The No. 6 Aztecs held off a late rally and got an insurance run to help seal the win.
Freshman Tayah Lyons hit a lead-off single in the third inning and was sacrificed over to second after freshman Kayla Hendrix’s (Canyon del Oro) bunt. Lyons went on to steal third base and was driven in by freshman Alyssa Aguirre’s (Sabino) fielder’s choice. Aguirre made it 2-0 when she scored on sophomore Amerika Lopez-Bedoy’s (Sunnyside) RBI single.
Hendrix and Aguirre reached on back-to-back errors to open the fifth inning. With one out, sophomore Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View) hit a two-run double to right field to bring them in as Pima took a 4-0 lead.
Sophomore Julissa Lopez (Tucson) reached base on an infield error that scored Figueroa to cap the inning.
The Roughriders scored three runs in the sixth nning, but the Aztecs got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Hendrix hit an RBI double to score Lyons, who hit a double in the previous at-bat.
Figueroa finished 1 for 2 with two RBIs while Lyons went 2 for 3 with two runs. Hendrix was 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run. Aguirre had an RBI and two runs.
Sophomore Belen Camacho (Pueblo) got the win in the circle as she pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on six hits with six strikeouts and one walk on 98 pitches.
The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Field on Feb. 3 when they open ACCAC play against Mesa. The doubleheader will start at 12:00 p.m.
