No. 6 Pima softball improves to 7-0 after sweeping Mesa

The Pima Community College softball team opened ACCAC play on Tuesday against Mesa at the West Campus Aztec Field, and the Aztecs achieved a sweep of a doubleheader.

Pima (7-0, 2-0 ACCAC) was led by freshman Alyssa Aguirre (Sabino), who was 5 for 9 with four RBIs and two runs in the lead-off spot in the games.

Fellow freshman Izabel Rodriguez (Sahuarita) finished 5 for 7 with two RBIs and three runs while freshman Soleil Ponce (Sunnyside) went 5 for 9 with an RBI and two runs. Sophomore Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View) went 4 for 6 with two RBIs and four runs while freshman Kayla Hendrix (Canyon del Oro) was 4 for 9 with three RBIs and a run.

Sophomore Sariah Ferrentino (Sabino) and freshman Adriana Machado (Canyon del Oro) got the wins in the circle.

Game 1: (6) Pima 15, Mesa 8

The Aztecs scored in every inning and held off a Mesa rally to take the first game.

Pima led 7-0 after it scored four runs in the third inning.

Hendrix and freshman Angelina Dehler (Empire) had back-to-back RBI singles. With one out, the Aztecs produced clutch hitting again as freshman Isabel Mendoza (Cienega) and Rodriguez hit back-to-back RBI singles.

The Thunderbirds scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning, but the Aztecs responded getting three runs back to make it 10-5. Freshman Tayah Lyons hit an RBI single, and it was followed by Mendoza’s two-run RBI single.

Mesa scored another two runs in the fifth inning to cut it to a three-run deficit, but Pima tacked on three more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Dehler hit a two-run RBI triple and later scored on a passed ball to make it 13-7.

Mendoza closed out the game going 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs while Rodriguez finished 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run. Dehler went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs. Figueroa was 2 for 3 with an RBI and three runs. Aguirre finished 2 for 5 with two RBIs and a run. Hendrix went 2 for 5 with two RBIs and a run. Ponce was 3 for 5 with a run.

Ferrentino got the win after she pitched a complete game, giving up eight runs (six earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts and six walks on 156 pitches.

Game 2: (6) Pima 8, Mesa 5

The Aztecs rallied in the bottom of the second inning and held off another Mesa rally to complete the sweep.

Down 2-1, the Aztecs scored three runs in each the second and third innings.

Aguirre, Ponce and Figueroa hit three straight RBI singles as Pima took a 4-2 lead.

Mendoza had a ground out but brought in Machado. Rodriguez and Aguirre hit back-to-back RBI doubles to make it 7-2.

Dehler hit a sacrifice-fly RBI in the fourth inning to plate Figueroa and put the score at 8-2. The Thunderbirds scored two in the fifth inning and one run in the seventh but Machado was able to pick up the win.

Aguirre finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a run. Ponce went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run. Rodriguez was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs. Figueroa closed out the game going 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run while Hendrix was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Machado picked up the win as she pitched a complete game, giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts and four walks on 122 pitches.

The Aztecs will play at Glendale on Saturday in an ACCAC doubleheader. The first game starts at noon.
