Mica Mountain grad Macias breaks Pima record in 800 meters; Cambridge close to women’s mark

Pima freshman Noah Macias, a Mica Mountain graduate, took first place in the 800-meter race at the GCC Multi’s and Indoor Invitational on Saturday with a time of 1 minute, 52.51 seconds, breaking a 21-year-old school record.

The previous record was held by Dustin Zimmerman at 1:53.76, set in 2004.

It was Macias’ fourth NJCAA national qualifying time as he set standard times in the 1,000 meters (2:30.55), 600 meters (1:20.19) and the 4×400 relay (3:16.07) so far this indoor season.

Freshman James Jerusalem (Catalina) improved on his qualifier in the Heptathlon as he took first place with 4,435 points. He took first in the 60-meter race (7.04) and the long jump (6.69 meters). His total put him in the No. 5 spot in Pima school history.

Freshman Andrew Schmier took second place in the Heptathlon with 4,433 points. He earned first place in the high jump (1.81 meters) and the 60-meter hurdles (9.07). He overtook the No. 6 spot in school history.

In women’s competition, sophomore Sofia Cambridge took fourth place in the 800 meters with a time of 2:21.99. Her finishing time put her in the No. 2 spot in school history as she overtook Jacinta McMahon’s time of 2:24.45 set in 2003. Cambridge sits only behind Reatta Danhof’s (Ironwood Ridge) record time of 2:18.31 set in 2025.

The Aztecs will compete at the Don Kirby Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, NM. It is hosted by the University of New Mexico.
