No. 6 Pima softball sweeps doubleheader from Glendale to start 9-0

The No. 6 Pima Community College softball team improved to 9-0 overall and 4-0 in the ACCAC following a doubleheader sweep at Glendale on Saturday.

The Aztecs scored 26 runs against the Gauchos (3-4, 3-3).

Sophomore Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View) finished the day going 3 for 7 with four RBIs and four runs scored while freshman Angelina Dehler (Empire) finished 5 for 9 with two RBIs and four runs.

Freshman Isabel Rodriguez (Walden Grove) went 5 for 8 with an RBI and four runs. Sophomores Belen Camacho (Pueblo) and Sariah Ferrentino (Sabino) picked up the wins in the circle.

Game 1: (6) Pima 21, Glendale 1 (5 innings)

Pima scored five runs in the first inning, six in the second, seven in the fourth and three in the fifth.

Freshman Tayah Lyons fell a double short of hitting for the cycle. She hit a two-run home run in the second inning to make it 11-0 and a two-run RBI triple in the fourth inning to score sophomores Amerika Lopez-Bedoy (Sunnyside) and Julissa Lopez (Tucson) to make it 16-1. She brought in the last run in the fifth inning with an RBI single.

Figueroa hit a two-run single in the first inning scoring freshman Alyssa Aguirre (Sabino) and Rodriguez to put Pima on the scoreboard. She had an RBI single in the second inning to score Rodriguez again and make it 6-0. Figueroa added a sacrifice-fly RBI in the fourth and scored a run in the fifth inning.

The Aztecs finished the game with 24 hits. Lyons went 3 for 4 with five RBIs and two runs while Figueroa was 2 for 4 with four RBIs and three runs. Rodriguez finished 4 for 5 with three runs. Lopez hit a two-run homer in the first inning and was 3 for 5 with three RBIs and three runs. Dehler went 3 for 5 with two RBIs and three runs.

Camacho picked up the win as she pitched four innings, giving up one run on two hits with six strikeouts and two walks on 68 pitches.

·Game 2: (6) Pima 5, Glendale 0

Ferrentino earned her third win of the season as she pitched a complete-game shutout, giving up six hits with three strikeouts and one walk on 104 pitches.

The offense struck again in the first inning with three runs. Rodriguez hit an RBI single to score Aguirre and later scored on a passed ball to make it 2-0. Freshman Soleil Ponce (Sunnyside) capped the inning with an RBI single to bring in Figueroa.

The score remained until the sixth inning when freshman Isabel Mendoza (Cienega) hit an RBI double to drive in Dehler, who hit a lead-off single. Aguirre followed with an RBI single to plate Mendoza.

Aguirre finished the game 3 for 4 with an RBI, a run and three stolen bases. Mendoza went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run. Rodriguez was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run. Figueroa scored a run and Ponce had an RBI.

The Aztecs will hit the road on Tuesday when they play Paradise Valley in an ACCAC doubleheader. First game starts at noon.
