
The Pima Community College softball team put its offensive firepower on display once again on Tuesday at Paradise Valley with former Sunnyside standout Amerika Lopez-Bedoy producing six RBIs in the two games.
The No. 6 Aztecs (11-0, 6-0 ACCAC) scored 28 runs and had 37 hits in the two games against the Pumas (1-5, 1-5).
Lopez-Bedoy, a sophomore, was 4 for 8 with and five runs on the day. Freshman Isabel Rodriguez (Walden Grove) was 6 for 10 with an RBI and four runs.
Sophomore Julissa Lopez (Tucson) went 5 for 7 with four RBIs and four runs while freshman Alyssa Aguirre (Sabino) was 5 for 9 with four RBIs and three runs. Freshman Angelina Dehler (Empire) was 5 for 7 with an RBI and four runs.
Sophomore Sariah Ferrentino (Sabino) and freshman Adriana Machado (Canyon del Oro) picked up the wins in the circle.
Game 1: (6) Pima 16, Paradise Valley 3 (6 innings)
The Aztecs scored the first 10 runs as the Pumas got on the board with three runs in the fifth inning but Pima countered with six runs in the top of the sixth to come away with the run-rule win.
Up 5-0 in the top of the fourth inning, the Aztecs scored another four runs. Rodriguez hit a lead-off single and was driven by Lopez-Bedoy’s RBI double in the next at-bat. Lopez followed with a two-run home run to center field as Pima led 8-0. Freshman Soleil Ponce (Sunnyside) had an RBI single later in the inning to score Dehler to cap it off.
With the bases loaded in the sixth inning, Lopez-Bedoy cleared them with a three-run RBI triple bringing in Aguirre, Rodriguez and freshman Aaliyah Pereda (Mountain View) to make it 14-3. Lopez-Bedoy scored on the next play on Lopez’s sacrifice fly.
Lopez-Bedoy finished the game 3 for 4 with four RBIs and four runs while Lopez was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and a run. Rodriguez went 3 for 5 with three runs and Aguirre finished 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs. Freshman Tayah Lyons had RBI singles in the first and third innings as she went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs. Dehler was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs.
Ferrentino picked up her fourth win of the season as she pitched all six innings, giving up three runs on six hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
Game 2: (6) Pima 12, Paradise Valley 2 (6 innings)
The Aztecs broke open a tie game in the third inning and scored seven runs between the fifth and sixth innings to earn their second run-rule win of the day.
Lopez-Bedoy gave Pima the lead after a two-run RBI double that scored Rodriguez and sophomore Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View) to make it 3-1. Lopez followed with an RBI single to bring in Lopez-Bedoy. Ponce grounded out but scored Lopez to make it 5-1.
The Aztecs scored four runs in the fifth inning. Freshman Kayla Hendrix (Canyon del Oro) drew a bases-loaded walk to score Lopez. Freshman Isabel Mendoza grounded out and brought in Dehler. Aguirre followed with a two-run single to plate Ponce and Hendrix as Pima went up 9-1.
Mendoza and Aguirre hit back-to-back RBI singles as part of a three-run sixth inning.
Aguirre finished 3 for 5 with three RBIs and a run. Rodriguez also went 3 for 5 with an RBI and a run. Lopez was 3 for 4 with an RBI and three runs. Dehler was 3 for 4 with two runs. Lopez-Bedoy and Mendoza were each 1 for 4 with two RBIs and a run.
Machado earned the win as she pitched all six innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
The Aztecs will play at South Mountain in Phoenix on Saturday in an ACCAC doubleheader. The first game is at 12:00 p.m. It will be the first meeting between the two teams since last year’s Region I, Division II championship matchup.
Cienega graduate Kaeliann Glass and Ironwood Ridge alum Isabella Wolfe play with South Mountain (4-5, 3-3).
