Pueblo’s Brooklyn Espinoza eclipses 1,000 career rebounds as junior

In the final minutes of the first quarter, Pueblo junior forward Brooklyn Espinoza secured her 1,000th rebound on Thursday night against visiting Nogales.

“It feels great, especially since it’s my junior year,” Espinoza said. “I only got my senior year left, and I’m so excited for it because I’m just going to get stronger, faster, and my mentality is going to get better.”

Espinoza ended her night with 13 points and a season-high 30 rebounds, her 23rd double-double of the year. The 30 rebounds was not a personal record. That occurred her freshman season when she pulled down 35 rebounds in a win over Cholla. The 35 rebounds ranks fourth in state history.

She is now at 1,023 career rebounds.

In the second quarter, Pueblo (23-4) tightened on defense, holding Nogales (15-11) to three points in the quarter. The defense displayed led to many transition points for the Warriors, giving them a 30-10 lead at the half.

Pueblo would go on to win 47-25.

Senior small forward America Cazares scored 19 points, leading all scorers.

Cazares now has 2,865 career points, 48 away from reaching former Catalina Foothills standout Julie Brase (2,913 points from 1994-98) for the most in state history.

Cazares is 135 points away from becoming the first girls player in the state to reach 3,000 points.
