No. 12 Arizona stuns No. 2 Texas Tech with school-record ninth straight run-rule win



No. 12 Arizona opened the series against No. 2 Texas Tech and All-American pitcher NiJaree Canady with a 9-0 run-rule win on Friday night, marking the Wildcats’ ninth consecutive run-rule victory — setting a program record.

The Wildcats (21-5, 4-0 Big 12) continued their string of run-rule wins that started with an 8-0 win over Eastern Illinois in the Hillenbrand Invitational on Feb. 26.

Caitlin Lowe’s team has outscored its nine opponents 94-8 in the historic streak.

Arizona scored nine runs on six hits and drew two walks to upset the Red Raiders (25-2, 3-1).

UConn transfer Grace Jenkins went 2 for 3 with two home runs and seven RBIs to lead Arizona.

Tayler Biehl was 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles and one RBI.

Arizona scored five runs in the third inning to take the lead. Biehl drove in the first run with an RBI double to bring home Regan Shockey from first base. Jenkins then hit a three-run home run to give the Wildcats a 4-0 lead and Anyssa Wild followed Jenkins with a solo home run.

The Wildcats took a 9-0 lead in the fourth inning when Jenkins hit a grand slam.

In the circle, Jalen Adams picked up a complete-game shutout to improve to 12-3 on the season. She struck out four with one walk and allowed only four hits.

Entering the series, Texas Tech had a .415 batting average, good for second in the country. The Red Raiders ranked top-five nationally in other notable hitting stats, such as home runs, hits, slugging percentage and runs. Texas Tech’s 273 total runs ranked third in the NCAA, only behind UCLA’s 280 and Oklahoma’s 351.

Canady (9-2) allowed six hits and nine runs (four earned) in four innings. She had eight strikeouts and two walks. She is now 3-2 against Arizona in her career.

Arizona will try to win the series Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader that starts at 10 a.m., Tucson time. The second game at noon was moved up from Sunday because of an expected wind storm in the Lubbock area on Sunday.
