Pima women advance to quarterfinals of NJCAA Division II tourney after beating Des Moines Area

Melicia Nelson’s near triple-double and Kiley Sours-Miller’s 26 points and nine rebounds led No. 4 Pima past No. 13 Des Moines (Iowa) Area 71-64 in the second round of the NJCAA Division II tournament at Hickory (N.C.).

The Aztecs (27-4) advance to the quarterfinals, where they will play No. 12 Cranford (N.J.) Union, which upset No. 5 Livonia (Mich.) Schoolcraft 66-63 on Monday.

The Aztecs, on a 15-game winning streak, will play the Owls (24-4) at noon, Tucson time, on Thursday.

Nelson finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in the win over Des Moines Area.

Sours-Miller got her 26 points on 12-of-19 shooting from the field.

Reigne Waugh also had 10 points, which included making the only 3-pointer she attempted.

Pima held off Des Moines Area after leading 56-42 entering the fourth quarter and 61-46 with 7:29 left after Sours-Miller made a jumper.

After Des Moines Area cut the lead to 69-61 with 1:38 remaining, it had a chance to make the game closer after a Pima turnover but could not convert.

Sours-Miller’s jump shot with 32 seconds left put Pima ahead 71-61.
