The Pima Community College softball swept rival Phoenix College on Tuesday at the West Campus Aztec Field after getting swept by the Bears in Phoenix at the end of February.
The No. 12 Aztecs (32-5, 24-4 in ACCAC) took the lead in the conference standings over No. 11 Phoenix College (28-6, 22-6) as they increased their winning streak to eight games
Sophomore Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View) closed out the day going 4 for 6 with three RBIs, three runs, a home run and two doubles. Freshman Soleil Ponce (Sunnyside) finished 2 for 5 with two RBIs while sophomore Amerika Lopez-Bedoy (Sunnyside) went 3 for 6 with an RBI and a run. Sophomore Julissa Lopez (Tucson) was 2 for 6 with an RBI and two runs and freshman Angelina Dehler (Empire) was 1 for 3 with two RBIs, a run and three walks.
Freshman Adriana Machado (Canyon del Oro) got the win in her start while sophomore Belen Camacho (Pueblo) got the win in relief in the second game.
Game 1: (12) Pima 7, (11) Phoenix 3: The Aztecs rallied and broke open a 3-3 tie with four runs in the fifth inning as Camacho closed the game.
The Aztecs trailed 3-0 heading into the bottom of the third inning. Freshman Isabel Rodriguez (Walden Grove) reached base on a fielder’s choice. Figueroa stepped up and hit a two-run homer to right field to cut the deficit to one run. Lopez followed with a home run of her own to right field to tie the game at 3.
The Aztecs took the lead for good in the fifth inning. They loaded the bases with no outs. Figueroa put the Aztecs ahead with an RBI single that scored Lopez-Bedoy. Freshman Kayla Hendrix (Canyon del Oro) scored on an error to make it 5-3. Dehler drew a bases loaded walk to bring in Rodriguez and Ponce followed with an RBI single to plate Figueroa to cap off the four-run inning.
Figueroa finished the game 2 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs. Lopez went 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run while Rodriguez was 1 for 4 with two runs. Lopez-Bedoy finished 2 for 3 with a run and Ponce was 1 for 3 with an RBI.
Machado (12-2) loaded the bases in the seventh inning, but Camacho came in and struck out the side on 11 pitches (10 for strikes). Machado got the win as she pitched six innings, giving up three runs on 13 hits. Camacho threw one inning and had three strikeouts.
Game 2: (12) Pima 3, (11) Phoenix 1: The Aztecs broke another tie after scoring two runs in the sixth inning to help seal the sweep.
With the game tied at 1, the Aztecs got back-to-back hits from Figueroa and Lopez with one out in the sixth. Sophomore Jiselle Nunez (Tucson) drew a walk to load the bases. Dehler produced another bases loaded walk to score Figueroa. Ponce drove an RBI single to center field to score Lopez.
The Bears left a runner stranded as Camacho got a pop up, a strikeout and a flyout to end the game.
Dehler scored in the second inning and the Bears tied the game in the fourth inning.
Figueroa finished 2 for 2 with a run. Ponce went 1 for 2 with an RBI while Lopez-Bedoy was 1 for 3 with an RBI. Lopez went 1 for 3 with a run and Dehler was 0 for 1 with an RBI, a run and two walks.
Camacho (11-2) got the win as she pitched 3 2/3 innings with three hits, two strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore Sariah Ferrentino (Sabino) started the game and pitched 3 1/3 innings, giving up one run on two hits with one strikeout and four walks.
The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Field on Tuesday for an ACCAC doubleheader against Mesa at the West Campus Aztec Field. First game will start at 12:00 p.m. Pima is 4-0 against Mesa this season.
