Catalina Foothills over Sahuaro but tough road ahead

Division II No. 23 Catalina Foothills beat D-II No. 49 Sahuaro 9-0 Tuesday afternoon at home. The victory moved the Falcons to 4-2 on the year but the program is currently on the outside of playoff berth as a team at this point with only section champions and teams ranked high enough in the top 16 qualifying. The Falcons have qualified for every state playoffs since the school started competing in 1993.

Catalina Foothills took third place in 1993 and the program has 17 state championships and five runner-up finishes to lead D-II. Current head coach Daniel Root has three state titles from 2021-2023. The Falcons finished in quarterfinal round last year with a No. 9 ranking.

The Falcons will host D-II No. 3 Salpointe (8-0) on Thursday and Sahuaro fell to 3-6 on the year and the Cougars will travel to D-II No. 59 Flowing Wells (1-9-1) on the same day. Sahuaro won four state championships between 1973 and 1979.
