Pima Community College’s NJCAA Division II national championship in women’s basketball was so meaningful, a day was proclaimed in the Aztecs’ honor.
The Pima County Board of Supervisors proclaimed during their meeting Tuesday that April 7 is Pima Community College Women’s Basketball National Champions Day.
Pima coach Todd Holthaus was on hand with assistant coaches Jim Rosborough, Pete Fajardo, Felicia Greenhouse, Leon Stallworth, Sydni Stallworth and freshman guard Nevaeh Urenda.
“I’ve been at Pima for 19 years; I was a junior college product myself,” Holthaus said at the meeting. “I know the value first hand of junior colleges and community colleges, and being at Pima for almost 20 years now, this is a national championship for this team, but I also think that it’s a national championship for all the years that we’ve done this and for all the athletics at Pima Community College.”
The Aztecs defeated Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Kirkwood 64-58 last month in the NJCAA Division II championship at Hickory, N.C., earning their first national title in program history.
They finished with their first 30-win season (30-4). They also earned the ACCAC Division II regular season title and NJCAA Region I, Division II championship, winning their last 18 games in the process.
“The foundation that Pima offers its students to come to Pima for a couple years and then go on afterwards and do great things, and many times, coming back to Tucson and giving back to our own community, as well as going out into the world and doing things representing Pima Community College, is so worth it,” Holthaus stated. “Basketball is a talent that gets them here, but it’s actually the tool that they use to get their education. And so I’m just grateful for these opportunities.
“I’m so proud to represent Tucson, and I love going places and representing Pima. The young ladies that do it for our program year after year are the best of the best. … This is amazing. I never had a proclamation before, so this will look good on the display wall with all the other region championships and now the national championship.”
