
The Pima Community College softball team has put together its second double-digit win streak of the season following a doubleheader sweep of Mesa on Tuesday at the West Campus Aztec Field.
The 10th-ranked Aztecs (34-5, 26-4 in ACCAC) increased their winning streak to 10 games with the two wins over Mesa (12-26, 9-23).
Pima opened the season with 12 straight wins.
Sophomore Julissa Lopez (Tucson) went 5 for 8 with four RBIs and a run in the two games Tuesday.
Freshman Isabel Mendoza (Cienega) finished 3 for 5 with four runs and two walks while freshman Angelina Dehler (Empire) was 3 for 7 with two RBIs and two runs. Freshman Isabel Rodriguez (Walden Grove) went 2 for 9 with three RBIs and three runs.
Sophomore Amerika Lopez-Bedoy (Sunnyside) was 3 for 6 with three RBIs. Freshmen Soleil Ponce (Sunnyside) and Tayah Lyons made their impacts in individual games. Freshmen Adriana Machado (Canyon del Oro) and Brooklyn Machado (Canyon del Oro) picked up the wins in the circle.
Game 1: (10) Pima 6, Mesa 3: The Aztecs rallied in the second inning and held off a Mesa rally to take the first game.
Down 1-0 in the second inning, the Aztecs scored three runs to take the lead for good. Ponce hit an RBI double to drive in sophomore Jiselle Nunez (Tucson) to tie the game. Lopez-Bedoy hit a two-tun single to bring around Ponce and Mendoza to cap off the inning.
Ponce hit RBI singles in the third and fifth innings as the Aztecs took a 5-1 lead.
The Thunderbirds scored two runs in the sixth inning, but the Aztecs responded with an insurance run in the bottom half of the sixth when Lopez hit an RBI single to score Rodriguez.
Ponce closed out the game going 3 for 3 with three RBIs and a run. Lopez-Bedoy went 1 for 3 with two RBIs while Lopez finished 2 for 4 with an RBI. Rodriguez, Mendoza and Dehler each scored a run.
Machado picked up the win as she pitched a complete game, giving up three runs on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks on 94 pitches.
Game 2: (10) Pima 12, Mesa 4 (6 innings): Lopez hit a walk-off RBI single in the sixth inning to secure the run-rule victory for the Aztecs.
The Aztecs got the offense going early with six runs in the first inning. Dehler hit a two-run double to plate sophomore Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View) and Lopez to make it 3-0. After a Mendoza walk, Lyons and Lopez-Bedoy hit back-to-back RBI doubles. Lyons scored on a fielder’s choice hit by Rodriguez to make it 6-0.
Mesa scored three runs in the top of the third inning, but the Aztecs responded with three of their own. Freshman Kayla Hendrix (Canyon del Oro) hit a sacrifice fly to score Mendoza while Rodriguez and Lopez hit RBI singles to make it 9-3.
The Aztecs scored another three runs in the sixth inning to earn the run-rule win. Freshman Kalia De Mello hit an RBI single to score Mendoza, and Lyons scored on an error to make it 11-4. Two batters later, Lopez ended the game with her walk-off hit.
Lyons finished 4 for 4 with an RBI and three runs while Lopez went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and a run.
Dehler went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run. Mendoza was 2 for 2 with three runs. Rodriguez finished 1 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs. Lopez-Bedoy was 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Machado picked up the win as she pitched four innings, giving up four runs (one earned) on five hits with four strikeouts and five walks on 87 pitches.
The Aztecs will play an ACCAC doubleheader at Glendale on Saturday at 12:00 and 2:00 p.m.
