Canyon del Oro freshman Savanna Mares pitched her second perfect game of the season, recording 20 stikeouts in 90 pitches in the Dorados’ 10-0 win at Pueblo in a regulation seven-inning game Friday.

The 20 strikeouts are the most by a Southern Arizona pitcher in a perfect game, matching Empire’s Kendall Freidinger against Safford last year and Marana’s Jessie Pretzer against Cienega in 2006.

CDO and Arizona legend Kenzie Fowler-Quinn recorded nine perfect games with her highest strikeout total 17 in such games, against Flowing Wells as a freshman in 2006.

Mares’ other perfect game was a three-inning 15-0 win over Flowing Wells in the season opener Feb. 26. She struck out seven of the nine batters she faced in that game.

Savanna Mares, a freshman at CDO, is 15-2 with a 0.62 ERA. She has 162 strikeouts and 21 walks in 86 2/3 innings. Opponents have only 37 hits and six earned runs against her (Andy Morales/AllSportsTucson.com)
