Pima Southern Arizona track and field products Smith & Ugwu achieve qualifying marks

In the final regular season meet for Pima Community College men’s and women’s track & field teams, Southern Arizona products Andrew Smith of Tanque Verde and Elizabeth Ugwu of Sahuaro achieved NJCAA national qualifying marks in their respective events.

Smith earned an NJCAA national qualifier in the 1,500-meter race after he took first place with a personal-best time of 3 minutes, 55.69 seconds at the GCC Outdoor Invitational at Glendale Community College.

Ugwu improved on her national qualifying mark in the shot put. She took second place with a throw of 13.52 meters (44-feet, 4.25-inches). She moved to third on the Pima Outdoor all-time list. It was the second straight week she earned a PR in the Shot Put as her previous best was set at 13.37 meters (43-10.50).

The Aztecs will compete at the Region I Multi’s & 10K Championships on April 20-21 at Mesa Community College.
