
The Pima Community College baseball team picked up a bounce-back 16-6 win in seven innings Wednesday at Chandler-Gilbert behind a 14-hit attack that included a home run by Catalina Foothills alum Cooper Kruk.
The Aztecs (24-24, 16-19 ACCAC) broke the game open with nine runs in the seventh inning to beat the Coyotes (26-25, 17-18).
Pima was coming off a 5-1 loss at home Tuesday against Paradise Valley in a game in which it had only two hits.
In the win over Chandler-Gilbert, sophomore Mike Jones (Canyon del Oro) hit a shot to center field that scored sophomores Owen Wade and Matt MacDonald to make it 14-6.
Jones scored on an error after a flyball was dropped in left field. Sophomore Ramon Martinez capped off the inning with a run after a passed ball.
Freshman Adriel Figueroa-Brito, sophomore Jackson Glueck, Wade and MacDonald all had RBI singles in the inning. Sophomore Leon Cereceres had a sacrifice fly to bring in the first run.
The Aztecs got on the board with three runs in the first inning. Cereceres scored on a fielder’s choice. Freshman Damian Lorta (Desert View) knocked a two-run double to left field to bring in Figueroa-Brito and freshman Cooper Kruk (Catalina Foothills).
Figueroa-Brito had a sacrifice fly in the second inning to score Martinez.
Kruk made it 5-0 after he hit a leadoff homer to center field in the third inning.
MacDonald hit an RBI single in the fifth inning to make it 6-1 and had a bases-loaded walk in the sixth inning to give Pima a 7-3 lead.
Kruk finished the game 2 for 4 with two RBIs and four runs while MacDonald was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and one run. Cereceres was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs. Martinez went 1 for 2 with three runs. Figueroa-Brito finished 1 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs and Lorta went 1 for 2 with two RBIs.
Sophomore Quintin Hennesy picked up the win as he pitched five innings, giving up six runs on seven hits with two strikeouts on 52 pitches.
The Aztecs batted .424 for the game and generated eight walks.
The Aztecs are back on the road on Friday for an ACCAC game against GateWay. It will be played at Gene Autry Park in Mesa at 3 p.m.
