Tanque Verde’s Achilles throws no-hitter, setting up 3A semifinal showdown with rival Empire

3A QUARTERFINALS

No. 7 Tanque Verde 2, No. 2 Show Low 0

Junior Claire Achilles pitched a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts in the road win for Tanque Verde (27-5) over Show Low (28-5).

Achilles, who came two walks away from a perfect game, improved to 11-0 with a 0.38 ERA. She pitched her fourth no-hitter this season and seventh in her career.

She is 27-3 with a 0.67 ERA in 167 1/3 innings in her career. She has 317 strikeouts and 37 walks.

Tanque Verde scored its first run in the top of the second after sophomore Aubrey Cantalicio led off with a double. After a fly out moved Cantalicio and a player was hit by a pitchm, Cantalicio scored on a sacrifice flry by sophomore Aubrey Skaggs.

Sophomore Ella Haggard led off the fourth inning with a double and scored with one out when Mikaela Jackson lined a double to right field.

Achilles outdueled Show Low senior Addi Clark (6-2). Clark gave up two runs on nine hits, while striking out one and walking three in a complete-game effort.

NEXT: Tanque Verde (27-5) will face rival Empire (24-6) in a semifinal game at Flowing Wells on Friday at 4 p.m.

No. 3 Empire 8, No. 6 Chandler Seton Catholic 5

Empire sophomore Vanessa Grijalva went 3 for 3 with five RBIs and also was the winning pitcher for the Ravens to beat Seton Catholic (18-4).

Grijalva (12-6) scattered 10 hits in seven innings and allowed five walks with five strikeouts.

Empire held on after taking a 6-0 lead after the first two innings. Seton Catholic cut the lead to 7-5 in the top of the sixth inning.

Grijalva’s RBI single in the bottom of the sixth provided insurance.

Sophomore Kapri Tiggas hit a two-run home run in the first inning that put Empire ahead 2-0. She finished with four runs.

Freshmen Cazlynn Darling and Ava Norton each finished with two hits. Darling also had an RBI double.

5A SOFTBALL ROUND TWO

No. 4 Canyon del Oro 7, No. 5 Peoria Centennial 0

No. 3 Phoenix Pinnacle 20, No. 6 Marana 5, 4 innings

Junior Brooke Beck hit a triple and home run and had four RBIs for Marana (28-5) in the loss at Pinnacle (20-8-1).

NEXT: The Tigers will host No. 7 Gilbert Highland (21-9) in an elimination game Thursday at 4 p.m.

1A QUARTERFINALS

No. 4 St. David 9, No. 5 Mogollon 4

St. David (22-4) took advantage of eight errors by Mogollon (15-16) to pull off the home victory.

St. David freshman Mira Judd had two of the Tigers’ three hits and produced a run.

Senior Emma Jacquez went 1 for 3 with two runs and an RBI double.

Senior Paisley Gooding (20-3) earned the complete-game victory in the circle. She allowed four hits and two walks and struck out five.

NEXT: St. David will play top-seeded Superior (21-2-1) in a semifinal game Friday at 4 p.m. at Phoenix’s Papago Softball Complex.
