DEVELOPMENTS
— A second pitcher of Arizona’s rotation in 2024 has been elevated to Triple-A. RHP Cam Walty was promoted Friday as a reliever from the Single-A+ level to Triple-A by the Cleveland Guardians. LHP Jackson Kent has made nine starts in Triple-A for the Washington Nationals. The third member of the starting rotation in 2024 — RHP Clark Candiotti — was reassigned from Double-A to Single-A+ last week. He earned a save for Single-A+ Fort Wayne (Ind.) after he was sent there. Walty was 3-1 with a 5.54 ERA with 37 strikeouts and 14 balls in 37 1/3 innings over 19 games in relief at Single-A+ Lake County (Ohio). Kent is 5-3 with a 5.02 ERA for Triple-A Richmond (Va.). He has 44 strikeouts and 15 walks in 43 innings.
— Strange season for former Arizona outfielder Jared Oliva, who for the second time in a month was designated for assignment by a MLB team. The New York Mets designated him for assignment Thursday morning, and his spot on the 40-man roster went to reliever Dan Hammer. Oliva, 30, was picked up off waivers from the San Francisco Giants last month. The Mets optioned him to Syracuse upon claiming him. He did not appear in a major-league game with the Mets and will now head back to limbo. Oliva took seven plate appearances with the Giants early this season before going on the injured list — his first big league work since a 2020-21 stint with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He has batted .175/.212/.206 in 66 big-league plate appearances. Oliva is a plus runner and versatile outfielder defender who had 57 stolen bases in only 95 games with the Milwaukee Brewers’ Triple-A affiliate last year. He also has a minor-league option year remaining beyond the current season. He has the right to reject an outright assignment by the Mets if he goes unclaimed.
