Thornydale held on to defeat Mesa Four Peaks 9-8 Friday to open up play at the Junior League West Regional taking place at the Arthur Pack complex. Thornydale is the host squad and the team advances to face Hawaii at 8 a.m. Saturday morning. Gold Coast had a first-round bye.
Mesa is the state champion, representing Arizona in the tournament and the team drops down to the elimination bracket to play at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Thornydale took a 6-2 lead through three innings of play but Mesa scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game up, highlighted by a two-run triple from Ava Franco. Thornydale went back up 7-6 in the fifth and then Kenzie Scott hit a two-run home run to put her team up 9-6. Alysse Robles hit a two-run shot in the bottom half of the seventh but a fly ball ended the threat.
Scott and Aubrey Neighbors combined for eight strikeouts from the circle and Natalia Nunez collected five for Mesa.
