Benson 3-0 for first time in six years after rout of Tombstone; Tanque Verde wins first game of season

Benson quarterback Cohen Barney completed 17 of 21 pass attempts for 230 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in a 49-3 victory over host Tombstone for the Bobcats, who improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2020.

Benson will have a showdown with Tanque Verde on the road next Friday. The Hawks won their first game of the season and are now 1-2 after winning 41-14 at Palo Verde (1-2) on Thursday.

Cholla’s three-game winning streak against Phoenix Maryvale was snapped with the Chargers’ 49-19 loss on the road. Cholla is 1-1.

In Benson’s win, Barney also rushed for 60 yards on four carries with a touchdown. Wayne Stark rushed for 85 yards on nine carries.

Four of the Bobcats’ receivers finished with at least 36 yards receiving — Stark four receptions for 62 yards and two touchdowns, Byron Judd (six catches for 76 yards), Gaige Trejo (three receptions for 48 yards and one touchdown), and Rene Lorta (three catches for 36 yards).

Stark also made all seven of his PATs.

Linebackers Jake Scouten and Steven Deskins led the Bobcats with nine tackles each with a tackle for loss. Scouten had a sack.
