Walden Grove is a victory away with two weeks remaining to clinch its first 4A Kino title in football in four years, and a significant reason for the Red Wolves’ success is senior running back and linebacker Dominic Sanchez.
Sanchez, 6-foot and 205 pounds, is a returning all-region selection who had one of his best performances of the season last week in a 35-10 victory over visiting Catalina Foothills.
He rushed for a season-high 146 yards on 23 carries and had two touchdowns. He also recorded five tackles with a season-best two for loss, one of them a sack.
Sanchez is at 507 yards rushing this season on 108 carries with five touchdowns.
In his second year on the varsity level, he eclipsed 1,000 yards rushing in his career in the win over Catalina Foothills. He is at 1,071 yards on 189 carries with 17 touchdowns.
For his dominating performance on both sides of the ball against Catalina Foothills, Sanchez is the APS Digital Print/Frog & Firkin Week 7 Player of the Week.
Banners from APS Digital Print will be presented to the player and coach at an end-of-season awards gathering at Frog & Firkin.
