Sunnyside High School is building a boys soccer dynasty, clinching its second consecutive 5A Southern championship without any defeats following last night’s 5-0 win at Sunnyside over closest challenger Nogales.
The Blue Devils finish the regular season 22-1 overall and 5-0 in the 5A Southern. The lone loss was against Paramount (Calif.) in the Adidas West Coast Showcase in the Los Angeles area in December.
In the last two years, they are 46-1-2 overall without a loss to an Arizona team. The Blue Devils went 11-0 in region play in the last two years. They culminated last season’s unbeaten 24-0-2 run with a 5A state championship.
Head coach Casey O’Brien has coached the Blue Devils to an 81-11-5 record in his four seasons at the school. He also serves as Sunnyside’s athletic director.
In the 5-0 victory last night on Senior Night at Sunnyside, senior Demille Flores had two goals and Aaron Mendoza and Carlos Arias each scored a goal and assisted another. Adrian Valenzuela had the other goal.
Flores is tied with fellow senior Fabian Mendoza with 17 goals to lead the Blue Devils. Another senior, Adrian Burrel-Valenzuela has 14 goals.
In its 5-0 run to the 5A Southern title, Sunnyside outscored opponents 27-2.
Next up for the Blue Devils is the 5A state tournament. Sunnyside, ranked No. 1 among 5A schools in the state by the AIA, will host a first-round game next Saturday (Feb. 15) at 2 p.m.
